It has become obvious that I must be suspicious of every customer who comes into the grocery store that I work at. I’ve been running the front end, at night, for a few weeks. I’ve never had such troubles as I have since taking this position. Just last week, I put a suspended order up front while the customer phoned someone to get their pin number. While I was busy, someone who made a purchase walked right up and pushed the cart out the door. No one saw him do this, but it was caught on tape. When I realized the cart was gone, I had to call the manager. I was surprised I didn’t get in trouble. So they changed the rules about where to store suspended orders. I was relieved. I can’t afford to lose my job.
Tonight….well tonight was a bad night. This guy’s credit card wouldn’t go through. He says he’ll call the number on the back to see what’s going on. So, there I am, trying to suspend the order on the stupid new register with it’s touch screen and endless menus. I had to call my co worker to help out. I saw the guy up front, talking on the phone. Next time I looked, the man was gone and I didn’t see the cart anywhere. No one else knew what happened. I could have just kept my mouth shut. But nooo….I had to do the right thing and report it to the manager. I had nothing but the receipt. Their number from the store discount card was on it. The manager called the number, but he said it wasn’t the right number. He had to call the store manager, who had me sent home at 9pm. I was scheduled to 12. I have to call the store manager in the morning. Not looking forward to that. I don’t think I’ll get fired, but you never know. Maybe I’ll get some suspension days or put back on register. I won’t know until tomorrow.
So…listen up people who do things like that….You think you’re not hurting anyone? You think you’re so damned clever because you get away with stealing? You are nothing but a thief. You do hurt people when you do things like this. I’m probably going to get in trouble because a couple of dishonest shitheads. Your actions affect others. When you keep extra change given to you accidentally by a cashier, you’re putting them in jeopardy of getting written up, suspended or fired. When you steal from people, you hurt them in lots of ways. It makes a person less trusting, it makes them a bit more cynical.
I’m telling you, I’ve learned the lesson now. Always be on your guard and don’t trust people, even if most are honest. I won’t be looking at customers the same way now. Every one of them has the potential to steal, no matter how nice they may seem. Let’s face it people…I was scammed. The guy knew that card wouldn’t go through. While I was distracted, the woman crept to the doors and then walked out. Like I said, it’s all on tape. The man did get on his phone for a bit…but as soon as I was distracted again, he slipped out. Seeing that he was gone made me look for the cart. I was had. I feel stupid…embarrassed….upset and pissed off. So, dear customers, don’t be surprised if I’m not so friendly nor trusting. I’ve been burned. The unethical thieves out there have ruined it for you good people. It’s so stressful anymore with all this stealing going on. I’m having a really hard time keeping a positive attitude here. I’ve always believed that there more good people than not…I’ve tried to be kind and respectful to my fellow human beings. Crime is occurring more and more…increasing at a steady pace. The world I once knew….the one where you were careful but didn’t have to be in fear of getting hurt or robbed all the time….is gone. I don’t care how bad the economy is….no one has the right to steal from others. It’s wrong. It’s just wrong. This will sound bitter….but…I hope the people who stole the groceries……. choke on it. All I know..is if I haven’t lost my job….I won’t let it happen again. I will never be trusting of any customer. I will view them all with suspicion. You good people can thank the thieves for dimming the light of this woman’s fire. I’m so disappointed that so many people have no scruples…no morals. It makes me very sad.
