Halloween: Costume Boots

For Halloween, I’m being a mod girl. Now, no mod girl costume is complete without a pair of go-go boots. I am not willing, however, to spend $30 or whatever on go-go boots, so I decided to make my own fake boots for the costume. Here is how I did it!

First, I took paper and wrapped it around my leg to make the pattern for my calf. Then I did the same with my foot. I did not intend for the boots to cover the bottom of my foot, but in the end they half-cover it.

Next, I double-checked that this pattern would meet in all the right places. Since this is not intended to look perfect, I didn’t worry about seams meeting perfectly, only that it would sew up and successfully look like a boot.

I then tried out the pattern on scrap paper that was lying around. As you can see, the pattern is not at all perfected and there are places where it doesn’t fit right. Also, I basted elastic to the toe section so that it would sit under the toes. I did not do this in the final version, but if you cut your pattern to allow for it it does make for a more finished look.

Next I made the real thing! I used costume fabric that is slightly stretchy, shiny, and somewhat sturdy. Don’t ask me what it’s called, but any store that sells fabric that is good for dance costumes should have something like this. I ended up just cutting the toe area so that it would sit decently and look good enough for a costume (I will probably wear white socks underneath).

Later maybe I’ll add a photo of the bottom of the boot.
