Russian Roulette [aka Everyone Needs to Fall Back]

I Can’t Believe This. Rihanna’s a Devil Worshipper Now? The Internets is Hilarious.

So, I heard Rhi’s Rhi’s Russian Roulette when it leaked on Monday, and my first impression of the song was that it was dark…well much darker than her usual fare.

But, I mean, Disturbia anyone? Is this surprising at this point in her career? I mean since she initially came out inn 2005 with “Pon De Replay” and her first album (Music of the Sun) she’s progressively evolved as an artist, and it’s become much much MUCH darker. And I think that has to do with the amount of creative control she’s had over her music and image. But I mean, that’s just what I think.

She hasn’t been singing about puppies and ice cream, if you hadn’t noticed. Everytime you see here she’s signing about some sort of issue, wearing some form of All Black Everything, and you know what, that’s what she does. Right? Last time I checked.

So, now after the February Chris Brown fiasco, Rihanna’s  Russian Roulette leaks, and like I initially said it is dark. No denying that, I know what dark song sounds like. And this song’s a slow tempo ballad,  and coupled with the implied meaning of the title, and of course, the fact that anything she ever sings from this point on will SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY be connected to Chris Brown, can make for a somewhat depressing listen. And it’s produced by Ne-Yo. The KING of ALL SAD SONGS.

But it’s about suicide now, really? I didn’t get that from my countless listens.

The lyrics themselves, pretty darn vague. As, to point, a lot of songs lyrics are. We as listeners tend to connect the lyrics to our lives and personal experiences, and that’s the beauty of music.

But back to the point. She’s explicit about the Russian Roulette references, but then again it’s a game of chance. She could be talking about taking a chance to do anything. Literally. She speaks about her fear, and her determination to play for keeps, but I mean. Play what game? Keep what?

And for every person who says, “Yeah she’s talking about suicide” there’s got to be someone who gets that this song relies heavily on implication. Yes, it could be about suicide, or it could be about making a hard decision, or I don’t know, breaking up with someone, or whatever.

So somehow, people are like she’s a devil worshipper, and I’m like whoa, I was still on the suicide thing. How does this, her love of leather and straps, her lyrics, and image make her a devil worshipper?

This is like the Three 6 Mafia Thing all over again.

So. Please.

Just. You know. Fall Back.

Rhi’s Not a Devil Worshipper. Eye Roll. Relax.

It’s Just a Song Folks!
